Monthly Check-In: Goodbye May, Hello June

monthly check-in- Jessica Lawlor
May in review: Good times with the family at my cousin’s wedding, professional accomplishments including a hot air balloon TV segment, lots of practice teaching for my upcoming yoga class, hours spent in the studio and great memories (and a couple of yoga photo sessions with friends) with amazing friends.

Each month, I share three things I accomplished in the previous month and preview three things I’m excited about or hoping to accomplish in the month ahead. It’s fun to look back and forward, and as an added bonus, these monthly check-ins keep me accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you’ll join in and share your three things in the comments section! I’ve been thrilled to see that other bloggers enjoy my monthly check-ins and have adopted the format for their own blogs- this is AWESOME! If you write a similar monthly check-in/look ahead post, please feel free to utilize this format and be sure to leave a link in the comments below so we can all support you in your goals for the coming month!

In May, I…

1. Focused all of my energy toward my upcoming public yoga class. May was a busy month filled with taking lots of yoga classes, three weekends of yoga teacher training and several practice sessions for my upcoming class on Sunday afternoon! At the beginning of my yoga teacher training journey, I mentioned that I let go of other responsibilities and opportunities to completely prioritize teacher training and I’m proud to say that I’m actually sticking to it. Some people may not understand my journey and why this is so important to me, but I understand why and I’m not afraid to let this take precedence over some of my other goals at the moment.

2. Spent time with good friends and strengthened new friendships. Not only has yoga been amazing physically and mentally, it has also introduced me to a brand new community of amazing people I feel fortunate enough to call my friends. It’s often challenging to make friends after college, so I feel lucky to have found these people with whom I share so many similar passions. Everytime I hang out with them, I leave thinking, “Wow, these are my people.” For someone who struggled with finding deep friendships at other points in my life, this feels great. This month, I went to a Paint and Sip night (I painted an adorable owl mug), attended a friend’s awesome Memorial Day party and spent several nights just hanging out with awesome people and talking all things yoga and life. I feel so lucky to be part of this community.

3. Accomplished new things at work. I don’t talk about my day job too often on the blog, but May was an incredible month professionally for me. For those who don’t know, I am the communications manager at a tourism office in the Philadelphia area. I handle all of our public relations efforts, working with the media both locally and nationally to place stories about the county. Media relations was something that terrified me in school, so the fact that this is now my full-time job, still blows my mind. In May, I landed the most stories I’ve ever landed in a single month, including two TV segments (one in a hot air balloon!) and a front-page story in the city’s largest newspaper. It feels good to not only love what I do, but also feel like I’m actually good at it. May also marked five years since I graduated from college, so I’ve officially been a PR professional for more than five years now!

In June, I will…

1. Teach my first public yoga class (and officially become a certified yoga teacher!) The big day is coming up! This month, I am teaching my first public yoga class as part of my teacher training requirements. This is what I’ve been preparing for since March. I am SO incredibly nervous, but I’m also excited. The thing with teaching yoga is that you can plan all you want (and you should plan!) but you also need to go with the flow and adapt as needed. I have prepared as much as I can, so now I just need to bring my confidence and do the best that I can. Also by the end of this month, I will take a 100 question test to complete my yoga teacher training and officially graduate with my certificate! I am really sad that this teacher training journey is coming to an end, but I know that my yoga journey and my journey as a teacher are just beginning.

2. Celebrate the one year anniversary of the Temple Women’s Network. It’s hard to believe that this time last year, the Temple Women’s Network was just a steering committee of about seven people talking about what it might be like to have an alumni society just for Temple women. A year later, we’re a 600-member strong group with a board of nearly 20 and more than eight awesome events under our belts. I am so proud to be president of this inspiring organization and I’m even more honored to have the chance at a second term to continue guiding the group into the future. This month, we’re celebrating with an anniversary party at the rooftop bar of the swanky Hotel Monaco. If you’re a Temple Owl, I hope you’ll join us!

3. Kick off summer with lots of fun activities and events! Summer is one of my favorite seasons (I’m torn between summer and fall!) and I have lots of fun things planned for the upcoming months. In June, I’m running an evening 5K (wish me luck, I haven’t run outside since January), I’m going to the Train concert, I have a fun night planned at Spruce Street Harbor Park and I’m going to participate in my first 108 Sun Salutations event to officially welcome the season. Summer makes me so happy, especially after this long winter in Philadelphia. Bring on the sunshine!
