Monthly Check-In: Goodbye April, Hello May

monthly check-in- Jessica Lawlor
April in review: Having a blast at Temple’s Alumni Weekend Diner en Cherry event, practice teaching my lunchtime yogis, finally achieving koundinyasana in yoga and a gorgeous day down the shore for Easter.

Each month, I share three things I accomplished in the previous month and preview three things I’m excited about or hoping to accomplish in the month ahead. It’s fun to look back and forward, and as an added bonus, these monthly check-ins keep me accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you’ll join in and share your three things in the comments section! I’ve been thrilled to see that other bloggers enjoy my monthly check-ins and have adopted the format for their own blogs- this is AWESOME! If you write a similar monthly check-in/look ahead post, please feel free to utilize this format and be sure to leave a link in the comments below so we can all support you in your goals for the coming month!

In April, I…

1. Continued my yoga teacher training journey. April was another busy month filled with lots of yoga and three-ish teacher training weekends! I’ve been blogging about the journey here, so if you’ve missed any weekend recaps, feel free to get caught up. April was a big month for teacher training because we learned the date of our first public class! Eeeeeeeks! Mine is on June 7- it feels great to have a date set. In April, our complete 75-minute class “flows” were also due, so my class is now fully written. I’ve been getting some practice in by hosting weekly lunchtime yoga sessions for my coworkers, which has been great experience. Teacher training has been lifechanging so far. I’m not only deepening my yoga practice, but I’m also learning a ton about myself. It has been incredible.

2. Celebrated Temple University’s Alumni Weekend. Temple Alumni Weekend was great, but the highlight of the entire weekend for me was Diner en Cherry. For those familiar with the popular pop-up event, Diner en Blanc, this is a variation on that where everyone is encouraged to wear Cherry (Temple’s color!). The night started at various Rendezvous (meeting) points. Temple Women’s Network held a champagne reception. From there, we read a clue that lead us to the massive dinner party. Everyone wore red (I chose to wear white with red jewelry and accents) and we enjoyed dinner, drinks and dancing. It was such a fun night and I’m incredibly impressed by Temple’s creativity! I can’t wait for next year.

3. Prioritized me. Even though I still felt a little overwhelmed for much of the month, I did achieve my goal of slowing down a bit and focusing on myself in April. I’ve spent the past six months in go-go-go mode, and decided that April needed to be the month I put that to a stop. For this month, prioritizing me meant prioritizing yoga, which felt really good. I limited social plans, I said no to some freelance work I wasn’t super passionate about and I limited the number of things I said yes to. I hope to continue this trend in the months ahead!

In May, I will…

1. Focus all my efforts on first yoga class happening on June 7. Now that a date has been set, I need to break this goal down into smaller goals and milestones. I plan to sit down this week to map out when I need to memorize different parts of my flow by, when I need to create my playlist, how many times/when I can practice it on others, etc. I know that creating mini-deadlines for myself will help me stay focused and keep me from getting too overwhelmed. I need to dedicate this entire month to practicing, so I can confidently lead my first class on June 7.

2. Help lead Temple Women’s Network into its second successful year. As many of you know, I served as the founding president of the Temple Women’s Network (Temple’s alumni society for women). It was an amazing experience and I was honored to be elected for a second year in a row. This month, we’re focused on electing a new board and making leadership transitions for a second wonderful year. We celebrate our One Year Anniversary next year and I’m pumped! This month, we’re also hosting a High Tea, so that should be a fun and fancy event!

3. Complete Focus T25. I haven’t mentioned it too much on the blog, but since February, I’ve been doing Focus T25. For those not familiar, it’s a workout program by Shaun T (the founder of Insanity). There are six different workouts meant to be done 5-6 times per week for 25 minutes. I love the structure of the program- there are calendars to follow, so you never even have to think about what to do next. T25 is broken into different rounds- Alpha round was six weeks long, Beta round was six weeks long and I’m currently on Gamma round, which is four weeks long. I’ve been doing this alongside my friend/colleague Rachel and we are so sad it’s coming to an end that we plan to create our own monthly calendar using videos from all three programs. I’ve seen major results and love that I’m able to squeeze in a daily workout since it only takes 25 minutes and can be done in my living room. Anyone else ever tried T25?
