Monthly Check-In: Goodbye June, Hello July

monthly check-in- Jessica Lawlor
June in review: Trying out an aerial yoga class in the city, celebrating finding my brand new apartment, brunch before a heavenly spa day with my sister and taking my first-ever SUP yoga class (and thankfully NOT falling in the river)

Each monthly check-in, I share three things I accomplished in the previous month and preview three things I’m excited about or hoping to accomplish in the month ahead. It’s fun to look back and forward, and as an added bonus, these monthly check-ins keep me accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you’ll join in and share your three things in the comments section! I’ve been thrilled to see that other bloggers enjoy my monthly check-ins and have adopted the format for their own blogs- this is AWESOME! If you write a similar monthly check-in/look ahead post, please feel free to utilize this format and be sure to leave a link in the comments below so we can all support you in your goals for the coming month!

In June, I…

1. Kicked off summer! Summer is my absolute favorite season of the year. I’m so much happier when the sun is shining! June was a full month of lots of summer activities with friends and family. I kicked off the season with my first 5K in several months- I survived, so we’ll leave it at that. I spent a gorgeous weekend in NYC with two of my best friends. I took my second aerial yoga class. I enjoyed a beautiful Saturday at Spruce Street Harbor Park, my favorite summer spot in the city. I took my first ever Standup Paddleboard Yoga class in the Delaware River- it was SO challenging, but I didn’t fall in the river, so I’ll consider that a win. My sister graciously gifted me an amazing spa day to celebrate my birthday/new apartment and her getting a big promotion at work- I had the most heavenly massage and enjoyed lots of sister time. Most of all, I spent tons of quality time with the people I really love…my heart is full and happy.

2. Celebrated one year as a yoga teacher. I can’t believe I’ve been teaching yoga for one whole year. Starting to practice yoga three years ago changed my life and starting to teach one year ago changed my life AND the trajectory of my career. Teacher training, becoming a teacher and seeing so many other inspirational people follow their dreams gave me the confidence to quit my job to pursue my own business. I’ll always be grateful to yoga for that. I wrote a blog post here about my teaching milestones from the past year and had a post published by Elephant Journal about the major lessons I’ve learned from one year of teaching yoga. Can’t wait to see where year two of teaching takes me.

3. Enjoyed a month filled with personal and professional successes. At the very end of June, I found an awesome apartment in my dream town. I wasn’t expecting to make a decision about my living situation so quickly, but I knew I needed to jump on this opportunity. I’ll move in August, but this was a huge personal win for me! June was also an amazing month business-wise. I had my first-ever viral blog post with a guest piece I wrote for The Penny Hoarder-I Made $40K From My Side Hustle While Working Full Time. Here’s How. It was super exciting to see this post make the rounds and get shared thousands of times all over the Internet. I also welcomed a brand new client in June that I’m super pumped about (more to come on this soon!) and one that definitely changes my business in a big way.

In July, I will…

1. Live in and work from Ocean City, New Jersey for the month. If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you likely know that Ocean City, New Jersey (OCNJ) is my happy place. We typically spend a week here in July, but this year my parents rented a condo for the entire month. Because I work for myself (woohoo!) I’m spending most of the month working from the beach! I’ll be heading back to Philly once or twice a week to teach, but for the most part, will be working from here. I’m experimenting with my schedule and am aiming to wake up early, as usual, and work only in the mornings, leaving my afternoons free for beach time! I also bought a membership to a yoga studio down here, so I’m really excited to try out different types of yoga with different teachers. I’ve only been down the shore for three days, but I already <3 living here so much!

2. Prepare to move! EEEEEEEKS! As I mentioned, in June, I found an apartment! I’ll be spending the month of July planning, shopping, packing and preparing for my move in August. I won’t be bringing any of my current furniture, so I’ll need to do a lot of shopping this month. I’m sure packing will also take up a ton of time. While I’m not super excited to pack up my entire life, I am excited to downsize and only keep what makes me truly happy. Here’s where you come in! Please give me your best moving tips! Seriously. This is all very new territory for me, so naturally I’m a nervous wreck, but I want to be super organized and strategic about furnishing my apartment, moving and making the space my own.

3. Slow down. The best part about living down the shore this month is that I truly have nowhere else to be and nothing else to do. For some reason, when I am here, I don’t feel the constant need to be “doing something productive” like I do when I am at home. Over the weekend, I sat on the couch, finished a book, skimmed through two magazines, watched TV and felt no guilt or no need to be anywhere doing something else. Of course, I’ll be working this month, but other than that, I don’t have any of the normal things I do when I am at home like dinner plans, appointments, happy hours, etc. My schedule, for the most part, is completely open to say YES (or nah) to whatever opportunities come my way. This is a very freeing feeling!
