The Best of 2010 in Books: End of Year Survey

I can hardly believe 2010 is almost over! Of course, like last year, I’ll be counting down my top 10 books of 2010, but for now, I couldn’t resist this fun survey that Jamie from The Perpetual Page Turner put together.

Stay tuned for my top 10 countdown coming soon!

(All links are to my book reviews if you’re interested in learning more about a certain title mentioned)

1. Best book of 2010? This is really tough. I clicked through all of the books I’ve given 5/5 stars to this year and finally decided on The Accidental Bestseller by Wendy Wax. It’s especially interesting because this year, I really read a ton of YA books, but this happened to be one of the only non-YA books I read all year. This book has completely stuck with me. Friendship, an inside look at the world of publishing, relationship drama; this book has it all.

2. Worst book of 2010? Ugh, I hate to even answer this question. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to go with Cum Laude by Cecily von Ziegesar. After being a loyal Gossip Girl fan for so many years, I was totally looking forward to this more adult book, but I couldn’t even get through the whole thing. I made it through about 100 pages, but I was super bored and had to put the book down.

3. Most Disappointing Book of 2010? Things I Know About Love by Kate le Vann. I was so looking forward to this book. It had an adorable cover, a fun title and a great plot. If you remember from my recent review though, I was so blindsided by the abrupt ending, and the abruptness of the book in general.

4. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2010? Definitely sTORI Telling by Tori Spelling. I didn’t have high hopes for this one because most celebrity memoirs aren’t very well written. I was so pleasantly surprised when I became completely absorbed in Tori’s world and then quickly devoured her next two books.

5. Book you recommended to people most in 2010? I recommended the incredible Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard to anyone and everyone I talked to. I also recommended If You Have To Cry, Go Outside by Kelly Cutrone to my PR friends and all of my friends who were graduating this year. This book just had so much great professional advice, but was also written in a fun and snarky way.

6. Best series you discovered in 2010? I’m going to have to go with the Pretty Little Liars series. I’m ashamed to admit that I had really only heard of this series because of the TV show on ABC Family, but once I began the books, I couldn’t put them down!

7. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2010? Oh goodness, so many! Kristin Walker, Kristin Harmel, Lauren Myracle, Sara Shepard, Katherine Center, Leila Sales, Sarah Pekkanen, Kody Keplinger, Eve Marie Mont and Erin McCahan.

8. Most hilarious read of 2010? I laughed out loud so many times during Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang by Chelsea Handler, it was kind of ridiculous and embarrassing. Also, Leila Sales book Mostly Good Girls had a good dose of humor on every single page.

9. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2010? I kind of hate to keep shouting out the awesome Pretty Little Liars series, but this may have been the year of Pretty Little Liars for me. Each time I picked up one of these books, I couldn’t put it down until I had figured out the latest mystery.

10. Book you most anticipated in 2010? Hmmm…probably Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti. I became a huge Colasanti fan in 2009 and I was super excited to get my hands on this book!

11. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2010? The Smart One and the Pretty One by Claire LaZebnik. I love the simplicity of the cover, but with a nice pop of pink. I like how through both the title and the cover, you really get an idea of what the book is going to be about.

12. Most memorable character in 2010? Bianca from The Duff by Kody Keplinger. I absolutely LOVED her and she was memorable because of her cynicism and her sassy attitude. She was real. Probably the most real character I read in 2010.

13. Most beautifully written book in 2010? Ask Again Later by Jill A. Davis. I loved how this one was written in prose; almost fragmented, but every word was chosen so carefully.

14. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2010? Easy answer. God Never Blinks by Regina Brett. Each chapter is filled with a life lesson; some simple, some more complicated, all completely do-able. Loved this one, especially after a difficult few months.

15. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2010 to finally read? The Princess Diaries series. I had read a few of these when I was younger, but this year, I read the entire series, start to finish. They were even better than I remembered! Weirdly, I didn’t review them (maybe because I devoured them so quickly it was like I was reading one look book) but either way, they were awesome!

Book Blogging in 2010 (optional)

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2010? Oh wow, this is a tough one. After I made the switch to my own domain, I got really serious about finding new and great blogs to read and I definitely did. Here are a few that I never miss: Steph Su Reads, Actin’ Up With Books, Books Sweets and Other Treats, Fiction Folio, Forever Young, Hobbitsies, Laurens Crammed Bookshelf, Pure Imagination, Steph the Bookworm, The Book Scout, YA Bliss, YA Addict and of course,  The Perpetual Page Turner.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2010? God Never Blinks by Regina Brett. I read this book at exactly the right moment in my life and I think I was able to really capture the reasons this book affected me in my review.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog? I’ve enjoyed doing some more discussion centric posts this year. Two of my favorites were Kindle vs. Nook when I was trying to decide which E-Reader to get and the other was a discussion about how many books my readers are able to read at a time.

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else’s blog? What an awesome question! I loved Steph Su’s recent discussion called Professionalism, Presence and Their Influences on the Reading Experience.

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? I had such a wonderful time meeting Jennifer Weiner at my first author signing ever. It was awesome to meet one of my favorite authors! We got to chat for a few minutes and I really appreciated how she took the time to personally talk with each fan. It was just an all around wonderful experience and I hope to get to more signings and bookish events in 2011!

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2010? Too many to count! I loved getting to chat with so many awesome authors and interviewing them on my blog. Meeting Jennifer Weiner. My first blogoversary. Moving from blogspot to my own domain. Starting to participate in the meme, In My Mailbox, where I’ve found so many awesome bloggers that I hadn’t heard of before.

7. Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? Definitely NetGalley! How amazing that there’s a site out there just for people who review books to check out electronic copies of not yet released books! I’ve requested three books so far and I know that I’ll continue to frequently check out the site for new finds!

What about you? If you’ve filled out this survey, leave your link in the comments so I can check yours out! If you haven’t, feel free to answer a question or two. I’d love to hear about your 2010!

  1. I love all your picks! I most definitely agree with Pretty Little Liars. So far, it’s such a thrilling mystery! 😀 I wish you a wonderful holiday season!

  3. What a fun post! I’ll definitely have to add The Accidental Bestseller to my wishlist — sounds like a book I would really enjoy. And I’m glad to know there’s another “Pretty Little Liars” fan out there, though I’ve been slacking — and only read the first book! I really enjoyed it, though; it was a great “guilty read,” though I guess I shouldn’t feel guilty about it. Very fun!

  4. oh i’ll have to check out some of your faves and can’t wait for the top ten list. i’d say my most disappointing book of the year was The Nanny Returns, i was just so let down by that book. and by far my favorite read of the year was Water for Elephants, just SO GOOD!

    happy reading!
