Embracing Uncertainty: Why “I’m Not Sure” Is a Perfectly Acceptable Answer to Life’s Big Questions

There are a few questions I’ve been asked recently that I’m not quite sure how to answer:

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?
  • How do you see your blog evolving?
  • Where do you want to live?
  • Are you going to buy a house?
  • What are your career goals?
  • Have you considered starting your own freelance business full-time?

All completely valid questions.

The thing is…I don’t have any answers.

And for someone who likes to have all the answers (or at least SOME of them), having no real response to these questions naturally makes me a little uncomfortable.

Lately, a lot of the time, when asked these big, scary life questions, I’ve simply replied, “You know…I’m really not sure.”

And I’m learning to be okay with that response.

I’m know I’m not alone in being at a point in my life where uncertainty is the name of the game.

I thought it might just be my quarter-life crisis rearing its ugly head, but after a conversation with one of my friends and mentors Ron Vitale, I realized that more than ever, this uncertainty is not going to go away.

Uncertainty is simply a part of life.

No matter our age, career path or relationship status, we’re going to feel unsure about our path. And if we’re not feeling that uncertainty right now, we can be sure that somewhere up ahead, it’s just around the corner.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The key is learning to be okay with uncertainty and the discomfort that feeling can bring.

Instead of worrying about my future and trying to plan every next step to a T, I’m choosing to embrace this weird feeling and look at it instead as an opportunity.

No…not just an opportunity. A really EXCITING opportunity.

A blank slate, if you will. A perfectly crisp, new notebook, ready to be scribbled all over. No matter where you are in your life, your future is still unwritten and you hold the pen.

Sometimes your story may take some unexpected twists and turns, but ultimately, you are the author and you have the power to change your story and get the plot back on track.

And if you don’t know what the next chapter holds? No problem. Just keep writing.

Flip a new page…and let’s get to it.
