Monthly Check-In: Goodbye July, Hello August

monthly check-in- Jessica Lawlor
July in review: Private (!) John Mayer concert, Color Run, Jamie’s 21st birthday and Train, Gavin DeGraw and The Script Concert with my friend Rachel.

Each month, I share three things I accomplished in the previous month and preview three things I’m excited about or hoping to accomplish in the month ahead. It’s fun to look back and forward, and as an added bonus, these monthly check-ins keep me accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you’ll join in and share your three things in the comments section! I’ve been thrilled to see that other bloggers enjoy my monthly check-ins and have adopted the format for their own blogs- this is AWESOME! If you write a similar monthly check-in/look ahead post, please feel free to utilize this format (I’d appreciate a brief shout-out) and be sure to leave a link in the comments below so we can all support you in your goals for the coming month!

In July, I…

1. Experienced a private John Mayer concert with my little sister. Oh my goodness, July started off in the most epic way possible when I landed tickets to a private John Mayer concert at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. John Mayer was in town for the Fourth of July Jam on the Parkway and invited about 300 people to attend his final dress rehearsal. Thanks to my awesome friend Jack, I was lucky enough to get two tickets! No joke, I started crying when I found out! My sister and I got there a couple hours early, and when the doors opened, we ended up in the third row! The concert was wonderful and it was such an incredible experience to see my absolute favorite artist up close and personal.

2. Celebrated my little sister Jamie’s 21st birthday. July was all about my little sister turning 21! We celebrated for an entire week- her birthday started off with a night out with the family when she actually turned 21 at midnight. The picture above is from before her official family birthday dinner at Seasons 52 (yum). Then, the birthday celebration ended with an amazing night out in Philadelphia- we stayed at the gorgeous Hotel Monaco, ate at Cuba Libre and bar-hopped in Old City. Happy birthday, Jamie!

3. Got back into yoga. When I first started losing weight back in 2011, my job at the time offered free yoga classes. I started going pretty regularly and enjoyed it, but didn’t quite fall in love with the exercise. Then I became obsessed with running and yoga fell by the wayside. This month, my friend Melissa invited me to a free yoga class at The Piazza in Northern Liberties, so I went and got bitten by the bug all over again. Now that I’m in a steady running routine, yoga is just what I need to calm my mind and work out my body in a different way. I’m looking forward to exploring different types of yoga and even purchased a LivingSocial deal for hot yoga that I plan to take advantage of this fall. Any yoga tips for a newbie?

In August, I will…

1. Go on vacation to my favorite place on earth, Ocean City, New Jersey. Every August, my family and a couple other families head to OCNJ for vacation! This year, we’re staying in an absolutely gorgeous house a couple blocks from the beach. Every day, about 30 of us take over the beach and set up in a big circle for a day of fun in the sand. We eat so much amazing food, but I usually don’t feel too bad about it because I run on the boardwalk most mornings and we rent bikes, too. It’s really nice to escape the real world for a couple of days and I always come home feeling refreshed and re-energized to tackle my goals.

2. See John Mayer in concert (again!). Prior to attending the amazing private concert in July, I had already bought tickets to see John Mayer at the Susquehanna Bank Center for me and my sister. I love this venue and John always puts on an incredible summer show, so I’m really excited to see him again, even though I certainly won’t be in the third row this time. Needless to say, this has been an awesome summer of live music (Maroon 5! Train! Gavin DeGraw! JM!) and I can’t wait to see one more show before summer ends.

3. Send my little brother off to college! At the end of the month, my little brother Matthew is officially going to college! I’ve mentioned before that he is going to Temple University, my alma mater, and he’s actually living in the same dorm I lived in six years ago. I’m so excited for him to experience his first semester and I can’t wait to visit him on campus. And strangely enough, come August, I’m going to be an only child for the first time in 23 years with both Matt leaving for Temple and Jamie heading to University of Delaware for her senior year of college! It’s going to be so strange not having one of them in the house at all times, but I’m so happy for both of them- Matt starting his college journey and Jamie wrapping up her college experience.
