Start Your Week Right Sunday: Links and Goals

Start your week right! Every Sunday I post my favorite links from around the web and share my goals for the upcoming week.

Links

On PR:

An Agency Doesn’t Have To Be Your First Step: I LOVE this blog post. My friend and fellow PR professional Lauren Cox explains why despite what many colleges tell PR students, working for an agency does not have to be the first step in your career. I started my PR career working in-house at an organization and think you can have a successful career, no matter where you start.

On Email:

QUIT: Being a Horrible Email Correspondent:  Cordelia (aka Kelly Gurnett) of the wonderful blog, Cordelia Calls It Quits, comes clean about her not-so-great email habits and explains how she plans to get her inbox under control. On another note, Kelly was on fire with great blog posts and I also starred a post she wrote earlier in the week in my Start Your Week Right Sunday file about why she’s no longer writing for the blog Lifehack.

On Careers:

Why Being Selfish Is The Best Way To Get Ahead In Your Career: This awesome Brazen Careerist post from Robbie Abed explains why you need to be selfish in your career…because no one else is going to look out for you like you will!

Real World Realizations: My sister Jamie Lawlor is nearing the end of her PR “winternship” and writes about five real world realizations she’s discovered during her first experience working full-time.

On Entrepreneurship:

When Is It Time To Scale Your Business?: Entrepreneur extraordinaire Alexis Grant writes about the crossroads she’s currently facing in her business: staying purposefully small or scaling up to meet demand.

On Social Media:

This week, Facebook announced a new feature that will once again change the game for brands and individuals, alike. It’s called Facebook Graph Search and Christopher Penn from Shift Communications put together this fantastic primer for how it’s going to work.

Goals

Woo! I accomplished ALL of my goals last week…let’s see how I do this week.

  • Take advantage of having Monday off this week by getting a jump-start on both blogging and the work week ahead. A major event I’m planning for work is less than a month away, so I want to spend Monday getting organized so that I can focus on event planning during the week.
  • Schedule my workouts for the week and incorporate strength training. I’m learning a lot from my trainer about strength, so I hope to incorporate some of those moves into my weekly workouts.
  • As I posted on Thursday, last week was fantastic for my freelancing/guest blogging goals. Three pieces I wrote were published. This week, I need to brainstorm and pitch a few new ideas to get started on my next posts.
