That Time I Became a Real Adult and Bought a Car

Yesterday was a fantastic day…

Because I bought my first car! Isn’t she a beauty?

Yes, I was THAT girl at the car dealership having a photo shoot/moment with my new car.

After the car I shared with my sister (a trusty Ford Taurus named Hercules who served me very well for seven years) officially kicked the bucket two weeks ago, my dad and I decided that it was time I bought myself a new, reliable car now that I’m starting to get established and have a great job.

And from there the research began. I am NOT  a car person. Before this process, I knew nothing about cars (actually, I still know nothing about cars). I simply put up a Facebook status:”I’m buying a car for the first time and have no idea where to even begin researching. I just know I want a girly SUV. Help?” Believe me, if you ask Facebook and Twitter for their opinions, you will soon be overwhelmed with options. I narrowed my search down to four cars to test drive.

I fell in love with the first car I drove, and immediately knew it was “the one.” (On a side note, I hope shopping for a wedding dress someday is this easy). I decided on the 2011 Nissan Rogue and last night, I went to the dealership, wrote the biggest check I’ve ever written thus far in my life, and drove away in my brand new pretty car.

I came home to a little present from my mom. A guardian angel that says “daughter, please drive safely” (sigh, such a mom thing) and an adorable card that says “Congrats in recognition…of your new ignition. Let the good times roll!” My mom can literally find an appropriate card for every life situation. It’s a lovely trait.

Even though I feel like a real adult now that I have my own car (and car payments, ew) I’ve basically reverted back to a newbie 16 year old driver. This car feels so different and much bigger than anything I’ve ever driven and I am terrified that I am going to hit something or scratch it. I also feel extra protective over the car and don’t like when other people park next to her. I took my brother to get ice cream and watched the car like a hawk as people pulled in and out of nearby spots cringing if they got too close. Sigh, the joys of motherhood…

Oh, and this lovely vehicle needs a name. Very important business here. If you have any ideas, let me know. I know you’re not intimately familiar with her personality, but if anything jumps out at you from the pictures, be sure to leave your ideas in the comments.

Tell me about when you got your first car. Do you name your cars?

  1. ooohhh a nissan! awesome car! 😀

i got my first car during senior year of high school. my parents bought it for me. i tried naming my car and my family’s van but they didn’t stick. :/

  2. Congrats Jess, that is a beautiful car! I have always named my cars, but now that I don’t have one I miss Leon the Neon (I know, how original).

  3. Congrats on the car. My first car was my senior year, parents paid for it it was Ford Mustang (Black)..man, I loved that car. When I got married and got another car I passed it on to my little brother, then it went to my nephew, sadly those two took the car out of commission. Had some good times in that car.

  4. It’s always fun to get a new car — whether your first or 10th (except for the payments — you are right!) Have fun and be careful. What an awesome card — don’t think I’ve ever seen one like that!

  5. The husband and I just bought a new car–a pretty little gray Honda Civiv that took me two weeks to learn in to drive. (Stupid stick shift)

I totally name my cars–my 72 VW bug’s name is Mr. Nelson and my now deceased Mustang was Edgar.

  6. aw congrats again on the new car, so exciting! and love the gift from your mom, such a mom thing, adorable.

and i totally name my cars. still trying to decide on my new one but i know it’ll come to me soon, haha.

  7. I’ve been seeing all your tweets about this and feel bad that I have sad anything before now, but congrats!!!! How exciting! My car is still the car my parents bought me in high school, which thankfully is still in great condition. I’m hoping to get another year or two out of it, and then hopefully upgrade to some type of SUV. But since I’ve never bought a car myself, I have no idea what it actually feels like. But again, congrats on the new car!!

  8. Congrats, Jess — she’s lovely! Buying your first car is a very exciting experience. I got mine as a freshman in college and picked out a Toyota Corolla — the car I still drive! I remember going to the dealership with my dad and having him say, “With any luck, you’ll have this car a really long time — you could even be driving your kids around in it. So choose wisely.” That seemed unfathomable to my 18-year-old self, but who knows — my baby is still going strong!

I’ve always named my cars, too. My Corolla is the Silver Bullet and my old Corolla, the one I drove when I first learned to drive, was the Red Bomb (because it was tick-, tick-, ticking — and could explode at any moment).

  9. Congrats! I was excited to get my first car, even if it’s an used one! Can’t wait to get my first new one!

  10. A little behind but congrats on your new car lovely lady! It is SO CUTE! Car payments are not fun but having something to call your own and that you bought on your own like that is a great feeling! I miss having an SUV and can’t wait to get one again one day 🙂
