Book Packing Blues: Too Many Books, So Little Space in My Suitcase

Today, I am heading down the shore for ONE. GLORIOUS. WEEK. of vacation. This is my first real vacation since last May and I am ecstatic. I’ve being going down the shore with my family since I was a baby, and every year I look forward to spending time at the beach lounging, tanning and of course, reading.

However, going on vacation requires careful packing.

Of books, of course! Wedged in there with my bathing suits, workout clothes and sun dresses lie a stack of books, all of which I want to bring down the shore. Will I read 8 books? Probably not, but a girl needs a little choice in her life.Considering all of my clothes weren’t even in the suitcase yet and I was trying to cram books in, I had to narrow down my list a bit.

Here’s what I ultimately decided to bring (plus my iPad which has a few different NetGalley books already uploaded).

Thin, Rich, Pretty by Beth Harbison

If You Were Here by Jen Lancaster

Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn’t Have) by Sarah Mlynowski

Audrey Wait by Robin Benway

Little Black Dress by Susan McBride

I think I’m in for an excellent week of reading!

How many books do you usually bring on vacation (and how do you decide?!)?

  1. This year I only brought one paperback because it was 1000+ pages long! I also always read the newest Stephanie Plum novel – based on your selections, you might like that series. I usually choose books that I REALLY want to savor because vacation gives you the time to do just that!

  2. We don’t usually do “relaxing” vacations, so I used to just store up my magazines for a few months. I could read them on the plane and at night, and not have to worry about bringing them home with me! I think the best thing about my nook is that I can take tons of books with me and not have to worry about extra weight! Daughter & I are going away for a few days at the end of the month, and I’ve got Rival & Like Mandarin on my nook for that trip. Probably won’t get through more than 2, but I have tons of other stuff on there if I do!

  3. i brought 4 books with me when i went on a 3-week vacation. and it was hard to pick eventually i took 3 review books and 1 tbr book. but i ended up not reading as much i thought i would (read only 3 out of the 4 & before vacation i thought i didn’t have enough books with me).

have a great time at the shore! 🙂

  4. I had that same issue this year on vacation. I took one real book, that I had already started before my trip. Then I took my Nook with 3 NetGalley books and more than a dozen books I had bought that are just on my TBR list. And while I was at the beach, I bought 3…or 4 🙂 Oy vey!

Now the book I took with me, I left at the condo with a note inside. Kind of like take a penny, leave a penny.

    Hope you enjoy!

  5. I have such a problem with bringing too many books with me on vacation. For example, I went to Virginia Beach the last week of July, and while I knew I wouldn’t get much (if any reading time in), I still brought at least six books with me plus my Nook, which has a couple dozen. Did I read any of them? No..but at least I had the ability to. haha

Anyhow, have a great vacation! Oh, and I definitely approve of taking Ten Things We Did. That book is HILARIOUS!

  6. Ooooo Jen Lancaster’s book! I didn’t love it as much as her memoirs, but it was still super cute! I went on vacation last week. I only read 4 books. I brought my Nook that has like a hundred books on it and I brought 5 or 6 books that have been on my shelf for awhile. I didn’t read any review books, which felt kind of nice!

    Have fun on vaca!

  7. Narrowing down what books to bring on a trip is hard! A girl definitely needs choices. But, if you end up running out, it gives you an excuse to do some book shopping, provided there’s a bookstore nearby.

    Have a fantastic vacation!

  8. I always take too many books with me on a trip. But it’s better to have too many than too few, right?!?

After all, you never know what reading mood may seize you.

I will admit having a Kindle has helped a lot. 🙂
