Today, I am so excited to allow the lovely Lisa and Laura Roecker, authors of THE LIAR SOCIETY, to take over my blog for the day. Below are Lisa and Laura to tell you a bit more about their writing process.
Lisa: Okay, Laura, explain our writing process.
Laura: Aye Aye boss.
Lisa: Watch your tone, young lady.
Laura: *heavy sigh* Basically, Lisa writes the first chapter because she’s the boss.
Lisa: I resent that.
Laura: Okay, fine she’s better at starting. Then…
Lisa: *interrupts* Then Laura edits my work and writes the next chapter…
Laura: Excuse me. Then I send it back and she edits, writes, sends. We continue until we have the most wonderful first draft on the planet.
Lisa: *snorts* Riiiiight. Keep telling yourself that.
Laura: Hey. Our first drafts aren’t that bad.
Lisa: Grace took magic heart pills in our first draft!
Laura: Fine. You’re right. I forgot about the baby aspirin.
Lisa: After we have a first draft, we send to our beta ninja.
Laura: Oh God, what would we do without our beta ninja?
Lisa: We’d send to our friends and family members like we did with our first book. That went well.
Laura: Oh, right, they just loved the book. No changes. Works perfectly. Send to agents.
Lisa: So we did! We follow directions well.
Laura: And we were temporarily black balled from publishing.
Lisa: Well, until we wrote another book, anyway. But, let’s focus…writing process…
Laura: Ah, yes. So then our beta ninja gives us incredible feedback, identifying all the areas we knew deep down were broken. We hold a very tense phone conversation with lots of heavy breathing and annoyed sighs. The conversation is usually interrupted by multiple, “MOM”s and we have to continue at another time, which really is a blessing in disguise on account of all the heavy breathing and annoyed sighs.
Lisa: We usually don’t talk again until someone has figured out the solution to all of our problems. Mainly me. I am the idea whore, after all.
Laura: No comment. Because she’s right. Although I do have a few glory-filled plot solutions to my name.
Lisa: So Laura continues asking annoying questions until the plot is squeaky clean. And then we dive back in.
Laura: But we can’t both go back in at the same time. One of us has to “own” the document. This person is usually Lisa, because she’s the boss. Are you noticing a trend here?
Lisa: Hey now. I do like to have first dibs. But that’s just because I love messing with the plot.
Laura: And thank God for that, because plotting gives me a headache.
Lisa: So I edit and Laura follows and then we have the most wonderful second draft on the planet.
Laura: Riiiiight.
Lisa: Well, until we edit again. And again and again and again.
Laura: And then beg to get our hands on the manuscript before it closes.
Lisa: Uh, yeah. We signed a sacred oath with each other that we’d never read a finished copy of the book because we KNOW we’ll find crap we want to change.
Laura: Don’t tell, Lisa, but I totally lied. I’m gonna read it.
Lisa: Hey! I heard that.
Laura: What? I was kidding….
Lisa: Whatever. Just don’t come crying to me when you find a missing comma.

I guess there can’t be two bosses. Their relationship reminds me of me and my sister. Fun stuff.
@Laura Pauling, Haha, reminds me of me and mine too! Love it!
Terrific interview! I love the byplay between sisters – it’s kind of the same all over, isn’t it? 🙂
@Jemi Fraser, It definitely is! Sounds kind of like me and my sister!
