Want to know something that truly terrifies me and pushes me so far beyond my comfort zone I can’t even explain it?
Video. Yep, video.
I don’t know what it is about that little green recording light, but it makes me feel incredibly awkward and uncomfortable.
For months, friends and mentors have been encouraging me to start infusing video into the Get Gutsy blog/brand, but I’ve resisted. Until now, that is!
A couple of weeks ago, one of my oldest blog friends (circa 2008!) Ashley from Your Super Awesome Life, reached out to me to invite me to participate in her DreamQuest mini-course. (You can learn about the full and awesome version of the course here).
She asked me to create a video about letting go of imperfection when getting gutsy and going after a big goal. My first instinct was to say no. Video? No, thank you.
But then I realized how awful that sounded. How could I say no to this awesome opportunity simply because it scared me? That wouldn’t be very gutsy of me, right?
I reasoned with myself, recognizing that this would be the perfect chance to dip my toes in the water when it came to video. The video would only be shared with those participating in the course (and now, you) so it didn’t feel as scary to put it out there for the world to see. Plus, Ashley had already given me a topic, so the hardest part was already out of the way! I had officially convinced myself to do the video.
So I sat down on a Sunday afternoon in my makeshift studio AKA my bedroom and got to work. It took me about an hour and half to complete this project from start to finish (there were many takes!) but once I was done, I felt pretty accomplished, albeit nervous, and sent the video to Ashley for her course.
And now, I’m excited to share the video with you! Here’s the result- my very first video for the Get Gutsy blog:
In this video, you’ll learn:
- Why it’s okay that you are not for everyone
- Tips to stay true to who you are
- How to work backwards to reach your goals
After I sent the video to Ashley, I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by her response:
“I just have to say that you’re SUPER engaging on video. I felt like I was in a trance watching you and soaking up every word, haha. You should totally make more vlogs, lady!”
While I don’t LOVE the video (who *really* likes watching/listening to themselves?) I’m proud that I took this step outside my comfort zone to try something new and scary. Now that I’ve done it once, I know I can do it again and continue improving as I learn and make more videos.
Here’s to many more videos in 2015! What did you think of the video? Does video make you uncomfortable too?
