Get Lucky by Katherine Center tells the story of Sarah Harper, a workaholic advertising executive in New York City. When she sends out an inappropriate company-wide e-mail and is fired from her job, she doesn’t know where to go or what to do. She decides to travel home to Texas to visit her sister and best friend Mackie.
When she arrives home, she finds that Mackie’s life is not as perfect as it looks; all Mackie wants is a baby and she and her husband are struggling to conceive. Sarah swoops in and makes a seemingly ridiculous but generous offer. She offers to be a surrogate for Sarah and her husband Clive.
Sarah is excited; it seems like the perfect arrangement and certainly one that will bring she and her sister closer. Both Sarah and Mackie are surprised when the pregnancy completely turns their lives- and their relationships upside down.
First off, look at this cover? Doesn’t it just ooze summer. As we all know that I’m one to judge a book by its cover, I was immediately drawn to this one.
I loved this book. I admit I was a little skeptical about the plot because I’ve been more into YA books lately, but this book just sucked me in.
I got completely lost in Sarah’s world. She was a wonderful protagonist and I loved hearing her story, told in her own voice. Other minor characters (most notably: Sarah’s father’s new girlfriend) play a special role in the story and truly make the book more wonderful.
The story takes a few different interesting turns. It’s not strictly about the pregnancy; there are several mini-plots that keep the story exciting.
4.5/5
I loved this one, too! Center is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. She never disappoints. The relationship between Mackie and Sarah seemed so realistic and heartfelt, and I loved the storyline with the Love Library! I read it months ago and still remember it so vividly.
And if you haven't checked out Center's Everyone Is Beautiful, Jess, definitely look into it!
This definitely sounds like an interesting read. And I've actually been a little interested in the issue of surrogacy. I'm an English major with a Political Science minor and the subject has been coming up in a lot of my classes. I'll definitely add this one to my list and check it out soon.
