How I Helped A Debut Author With PR

As I mentioned in my review of A MATCH MADE IN HIGH SCHOOL, I’ve been helping young adult author Kristin Walker out with publicity for her debut book release.

I promise this is the last blog post (well, maybe) I write about the fabulous Kristin Walker, but I just wanted to give you a little more insight into my experiences doing PR for a new author.

Kristin’s husband found my blog and contacted me to ask if I’d like to help Kristin with PR for her book release. I immediately jumped at the opportunity because I knew it would be great experience and book publicity is one of the areas of PR that I’m extremely interested in.

Kristin and I stayed in contact throughout the last month through e-mail (and lots of them!). I wrote up a small plan that included reaching out to bloggers, getting Kristin more involved in social media and reaching out to local Chicago area newspapers.

Together, Kristin and I researched influential YA blogs in the blogosphere and contacted bloggers to see if they would be interested in reviewing the book, conducting an interview with Kristin or doing a contest/giveaway. It was so much fun researching and finding new blogs to read. Book bloggers are so kind and so appreciative when they are asked to review books, so it was a pleasure reaching out to them.

Next, I helped Kristin with her online presence. She already has a Web site and a blog, but she was not yet on Twitter. I helped Kristin get her Twitter set up and showed her how to find people to follow. The most important thing I taught Kristin about Twitter was how to ENGAGE and participate in the conversation. I think she’s done a pretty great job of conversing with her fan base and other authors!

Another aspect of social media that we explored were online radio shows. We found two great BlogTalkRadio shows and reached out to the hosts to see if they would be interested in interviewing Kristin. Sure enough they were.

The first show took place last night (you can listen to the show by clicking the below link):

Talk About My Favorite Authors” with Phoebe Jordan, www.blogtalkradio.com/phoebe-jordan

The second show is on February 27 at 11:00 a.m. EST
“A Book and a Chat” with Barry Eva, www.blogtalkradio.com/across-the-pond

Kristin is planning a book launch party next week in Chicago (click the link if you’re in the area and interested in attending!), so one of our other goals was to put together a press kit in case anyone requested more information. I helped Kristin put together a bio, a fact sheet and a document with snippets of reviews. The press kit is also on her Web site.

Lastly, I wrote a short pitch to send to local Chicago papers. No papers have picked the story up yet, but fingers crossed!

This has been such an amazing experience for me. I got to combine my two loves and passions: public relations and reading. I basically got to do exactly what I want to do when I graduate.

I felt so proud yesterday when I went to my local Barnes and Noble and saw copies of Kristin’s book on the shelf!

Thank you Kristin for this amazing experience! This experience has just solidified that book publicity is definitely one of the avenues I would like to explore upon graduation in May!
