Creative Writing: From The Other Gender’s Perspective

My assignment for creative writing today was to write a short story from the other gender’s perspective. This was especially difficult for me because I want to write young adult novels from a young teenage woman’s point of view.

Check out what I came up with:

“Alex!!!” my mom called up the stairs. I pulled my pillow over my head. “Alex, get down here!”

I groaned and rolled out of bed. Was it Tuesday already? Mom couldn‘t stop talking about our summer foreign exchange student who was arriving from Italy today. I’m sure she was calling me down to dust or vacuum or finish whatever chore we hadn‘t already slaved over all day yesterday. Whatever. What does it even matter what our house looks like? This girl’s going to be here all summer; clearly, she’s going to see how we live.

“Coming,” I mumbled taking my time trying to find a pair of shorts. I pull on a pair of yellow basketball shorts.

I get to the bottom of the steps and the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen in my life is standing in our doorway. She is tall and thin. She has long, shiny dark hair down to the small of her back. She’s wearing tight jeans, a white tank top and high heels. Her skin is the color of olives.

She giggles as she takes me in. All 6 feet of me standing before her in nothing but a pair of yellow basketball shorts.

“Alex!” my mom exclaims. “Couldn‘t you have at least gotten dressed to say hello to Guiliana?”

“Um…,” I stammered trying to think of something clever to say. “I didn‘t know she was coming so early?” I said, but it came out sounding like a question.

“Nonsense,” mom said. “I told you, 10:00 a.m.”

Guiliana winked at me as my mom carried her luggage inside the house.

“Ciao Alex…I think we’re going to have a very good summer.”

Have you tried writing from the other gender’s point of view? How did it go?

  1. I can't say that I ever have, but I don't think I'd be very good at it. I always seem to find it interesting when I read a book where there author is a different gender than the narrator. It happens a good amount, but it still winds up being a little unexpected for me.

  2. You identify, people always enact comments when anything is predicted to prove in 2012, like “obviously that is if the age is subdue here.” You do understand that the Mayans predict the humanity will finish on Dec. 21 (or 23rd)? So in all strong if anything is accepted to take place in 2012 there is solitary the slimmest feasibility that the world will take ended forward of it happens.

  3. I have written something from a male's perspective (a short story) and I loved it. I'm currently working on a novel where the protagonist is male and am very much enjoying it. Female voices still come to me more often but I like switching it up every now and then.

Cute short story! I think you did great with the male POV. 🙂
