NaNoWriMo: To Participate or Not?

It’s almost November 1, which means that National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is upon us.

For those of you who have never heard of NaNoWriMo, check out their site here, but the basic idea is that in one month (November) you write an entire 50,000 word novel.

It seems stressful, but one of the big things about this project is that tons of other people are also participating so there is a huge support system on the site.

Last year, I signed up, but never got around to writing anything. Still, I enjoyed getting the e-mails and hearing about other people’s journeys.

This year, I’m still trying to decide what to do.

I have a super busy November…I’ll be in San Diego for the PRSSA Conference for 4 days and I’m in the midst of midterms, but I’m leaning towards signing up.

I keep telling myself that by signing up, I give myself the opportunity to start writing and to connect with others who are doing the same. If I sign up, I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself to finish. I’d like to just see what I can get done.

It’s such an exciting concept though. A whole first draft of a novel completed in one month! Just by writing a little bit (or a lot, depending on what your idea of a lot is) everyday!

What are your thoughts on NaNoWriMo? Will you be participating? Why or why not?

  1. Do it!! 😀

I am, fersuure. Haven't done it before, but I write on this site (protagonize), and lots of ppl there have done it before and are trying it out for the first time too. I'm excited, and freaking out too, hah. Haven't even got a solid outline yet!! But it should be fun, and it's a great challenge for an aspiring writer 🙂

  2. I'm not sure I would do NaNoWrMo, but I've thought about doing NaBoPoMo before, aka National Blog Posting Month which is also in November. The goal is to post in your blog everyday. But I'm not too sure I could make that happen.

  3. Originally I wasn't going to do it as I've recently started uni and have assignments due in November. But then I realised what an opportunity it is. I have a couple of friends who are taking part. I've just finished the second draft of my novel and did so in a couple of weeks so I've proved to myself that I CAN write 50k in a month.

Plus, it would be a great opportunity to get another first draft done by the end of the year XD. With thousands of others taking part, it's extra fun and more motivational 🙂

  4. Oh, I'm SUCH a huge fan of NaNoWriMo! It's been a tremendously successful experience for me… and even though the book I wrote last year in November turned out to be a bit of a dud, it was an excellent way of forcing myself to stay committed to a project and see it to completion.

Too funny that we'll both be in San Diego in November! I'll be there on the 4th and the 8th… on my way to L.A., and then on my way back from L.A. Perhaps I'll see you around? hehe 🙂
