NaNoWriMo Tips

Well, I did it!

I signed up for National Novel Writing Month also known as NaNoWriMo.

I’m going in with low expectations; I’m going to write as much as I can and if I don’t finish, that’s okay too.

I created my profile a few days ago and have been adding writing buddies and reading and participating in the forum discussions. If you’re a participant as well, we should be writing buddies. Find me here!

I will start writing my young adult novel tonight at midnight! Crazy.

Since I’ve been reading up on NaNoWriMo, I’ve found some great tips that I’d like to share with anyone else thinking of participating:

-Fire your inner editor. NaNo is all about getting words down on the page. Editing and re-writing just takes up time. The creators of NaNo say that December is for editing.

-Go to a write-in! When you sign up for NaNo, you can select a region and see where write-ins are planned for. A write-in is basically when a bunch of writers in an area get together at a coffee place or restaurant to meet and write. Going to write-ins can help with motivation.

-Tell your friends and family what you are doing. In my experience, telling people what I’m doing (whether it’s writing or anything else) helps me to commit myself and hold myself accountable. Plus, in this case, your friends and family will know why you are so busy and frantic all month.

-Write early and often. The stronger and faster you write in the beginning, the easier the rest of the month will come.

Do you have any tips for those participating in NaNoWriMo?

Happy Halloween and wish me luck writing!

  1. I'm participating in NaNo too! It's my first year so I don't really have any tips to offer…only that you just write! xD

I see that you got the boyfriend list! Yay! Do you like it so far? 😀

  2. Hey!

Just stopping by to say thanks for the link to my article.

    Good luck with your novel!

Remember, we're all suffering with you! 🙂

  3. Good luck Jessica! My NaNoWriMo doesn't start for another three hours (or, in my case, at 9AM tomorrow – I'm no martyr).

Thanks for compiling the tips 🙂

  4. Saw your blog/twitter, thought it was great. Best of luck with the na-no-wri-mo. Had it in college, it's tough as nails but so worth it!

Stop by my page sometime. Hope the writing flows for ya!
