Book Review: Perfect Fifths by Megan McCafferty

Perfect Fifths
Author: Megan McCafferty

ISBN: 9780307346520

It’s the end of an era. I have finished Megan McCafferty’s Jessica Darling series.

Perfect Fifths opens with Jessica frantically running through an airport to catch a plane to the Caribbean to see her two best friends Bridget and Percy get married. She is late, disheveled and tired and as she reaches her gate she runs into (literally, runs into) the one person she didn’t think she would ever talk to again: Marcus Flutie.

When Jessica misses her flight and has hours in the airport to waste, she finds herself in a strange situation and finds herself at a coffee shop with Marcus.

Jessica and Marcus catch up and the tension between them is undeniable. When Jessica finds out that she isn’t going to make the next plane out of Newark, she and Marcus end up in an even stranger situation; spending the night at a hotel.

I love the series, don’t get me wrong. Books 2 and 3 were definitely my favorite, but when I got to book 4 and 5, I was just feeling a little disappointed. The series somehow lost its charm for me.

Marcus and Jessica are the original Edward and Bella….meant to be, perfect together and all that good stuff. It broke my heart to see them apart for so much of book 4 and then struggling to understand each other in book 5.

Jessica has definitely matured in this fifth installment…I thought she was even more cynical than before, which is hard to believe.

I loved some of the lesser-known characters from previous books who play a more prominent role in this book including Marcus’s roommate Natty and Jessica’s niece Marin.

All in all, I’m so glad Meg convinced me to read these books. I absolutely loved the series (even though I definitely enjoyed some books more than the others) and I am complete in love with Marcus and Jessica.

I definitely got the ending I hoped for. Did you?

3.5/5

  1. Hooray! So glad you stuck with them, too… and I agree — some books grabbed me more than others. Second Helpings was definitely my favorite, but I loved Perfect Fifths. Now we have to find another couple to give our love and devotion, haha!

  2. I have yet to read the last book (and honestly I'm a little bit scared too-I don't want this series to end!)

Jess gets MORE cynical? I thought she already exceeded that limit, lol!

Oooh, I want to see what happens between them. x)
