Series or Stand-Alone?

What’s your preference? Do you enjoy a good series, lots of books that keep you coming back for more, or do you like books that stand alone and provide a solid ending?

It’s hard for me to answer this question.

Lately, I have to say I am really loving the series. I’ve been reading lots of series including Kate Brian’s Private series and Megan McCafferty’s Jessica Darling series.

I love series because I love getting to know a character and following them throughout their life. I love knowing the mundane details about what makes them who they are and knowing every tiny bit about their life. I enjoy getting to know their friends and boyfriends and teachers, etc. I love getting engrossed in a character’s world and I think this is just easier to do in a series.

However, I do enjoy stand-alone books. The last stand-alone book I read was probably Hollywood is Like High School With Money by Zoey Dean and although I enjoyed it, I wasn’t ready for it to be over. I want to know more about the characters. I want to find out what happens next.

One good thing about stand-alone books is that once you’re finished, you really can move on to the next book you want to read without feeling like you HAVE to get to the next book in a series before you forget about all the characters and story lines. I do love those series though.

So, I guess you could say I’m a series kind of girl. What are you?

  1. I am SUCH a series girl. I get sucked into them and they take over my world. Whenever I read a stand-alone I usually find myself wanting more!

  2. I love me a stand-alone but I loove a series even more… gives me more time to enjoy all the characters.

  3. I love series books. I'm the same way you are! I love getting to know the characters. I like a stand-alone every now and then. When I was reading the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series and had 13 in a row, I read a random one between every few so I didn't get burnt out.

  4. I think I would say series, but my optimal series would only be 3 or 4 books. Something similar in length to the Twilight books. Once you get into 10 or so books into a series, I'm not as big of a fan. At least not now, but back in the day I was a big Baby-Sitter's Club fan, and there's over a hundred of those!

Thats a tough one. If I can get in from a series from the first book I am ok… but if I want to read a series and they already have 3 or more books for me to catch up on… I hesitate as I have so much I want to read.
