Book Review: When It Happens by Susane Colasanti

When It Happens
Author: Susane Colasanti
ISBN: 0670060291

I think I’ve found a new favorite author!

When It Happens by Susane Colasanti tells the story of Sara and Tobey, two high school seniors. Sara is serious about school and getting into college. Tobey is serious about music and winning this year’s Battle of the Bands. Both of them want to find their true love this year. Sara finds Dave, a popular jock and is thrilled when he actually likes her back. Tobey only has eyes for Sarah, but he is discouraged when he sees Sara and Dave together.

Told from the viewpoint of both Sara and Tobey, we get a glimpse into the innermost thoughts of both main characters. It was so interesting to read the viewpoint of Tobey, because let’s be honest; I don’t read many books with male protagonists. It was so cool to hear the thoughts of a male who really cared about a girl.

The switching viewpoint was an excellent touch because it kept my attention and made the story more interesting from two opposing viewpoints.

I found both characters to be very believable and very easy to relate to. I felt like I could actually be Sara, which I really love in a book. Susane Colasanti’s writing actually reminds me of exactly the kind of writing I want to be doing.

4.5/5

  1. I loved this book! I read it awhile ago while on break (my sister had it in her school library books so I decided to read it). It's soooo cute!
I love how earnest Tobey was.

  2. Yay! I have this one in my TBR stack and have been wanting to read it for a while… I think I'll have to move it up now! I don't read many novels with male narrators, either, so that's awesome.
