A Walk Down Memory Lane: The Baby-Sitter’s Club

When I saw that the wonderful Amy was hosting Baby-Sitter’s Club Week, I knew I had to participate.

The Baby-Sitter’s Club series by Ann M. Martin are what turned me into a reader. I’d always loved reading, but this series truly taught me how to dive into a book headfirst and get totally engrossed in the character’s and the plot.

Where it all began!

At the same time I started loving The Baby-Sitter’s Club, I also discovered the Baby-Sitter’s Little Sister series featuring Kristy’s sister Karen. Oh man, I LOVED those books.

I wanted to be JUST like Karen growing up.

I remember begging my mom to drive me to the book store and let me pick out a book. I’d pour over the covers and the back of the book and finally choose one. By the time we got home, I was already halfway through the book and my mom was angry that we bought the book since I was almost finished with it. Now, of course, I’m happy to still have most of the books that made up my childhood saved.

I’m pretty sure I even had a Karen doll with stringy blonde hair that I often braided when I couldn’t fall asleep at night. Of course, she had the signature glasses.

I haven’t even thought about the Baby-Sitter’s Club series until Amy brought it up on her blog, but to remind myself I took a look at the series Wikipedia page and was amazed to learn that the series ran from 1986 until 2000! It’s truly incredible that Ann M. Martin was able to come up with so many different plots and ideas to write over 150 books!

Reading through the character bios, I feel like I’m reuniting with old friends. I can’t even remember who my favorite baby-sitter was. Karen and the Baby-Sitter’s followed me through my entire childhood until I “graduated” to big-girl books.

Do you have any fond memories of The Baby-Sitter’s Club? If not that, what book truly turned you into a reader?

Oh man, I loved this series too! These books definitely turned me into a reader too. I also adored the Sweet Valley Twins series before graduating to R.L.Stine and Christopher Pike! 🙂

  2. I LOVE THE BABYSITTERS CLUB!! my mom would take me to the kids corner at the library and I would just read and read and pretend I was one of them. I even made my mom buy me a pink cord phone and I would pretend I had my own babysitters club. I wish I was a kid again!!

  3. AHH I loved the Babysitters Club! I was a member of "The Babysitters Club Book club" with Scholastic, so I would get like 5 book sets each month! That was the BEST day of the month that is for sure!!

.. My favorite was Stacey. I loved that for her parts of the book, she always dotted her eyes with hearts. 🙂 oh, and I always won at the Babysitters Club Board Game. Wow! Its been a LONG time since I thought about all of those books!

  4. Oh goodness, I loved The Baby-Sitter's Club books, too! The Little Sister series was great. Under my parents' orders, my sister and I shared all of them — just like your mom, they would get annoyed if we finished books we'd bought too quickly! At least they got double the reward for their purchase, though.

Just looking at the trademark gingham covers makes me happy! 🙂

  5. oh my god i love the babysitter's club. i had all the books and the club stuff and the dolls and seriously wanted to be a combination or stacey and claudia. loooove it.

AHHHHH! FAVORITE books growing up! I read every single one and owned about half of them and knew every single detail. I also have the complete book of like everything BSC, and it is still proudly on my bookshelf.

I was in the fan club, saw the movie opening day and loved the board game. Now I want to re-read them all.

  7. I loved the Baby sitters club, and I also remember reading Nancy Drew throughout elementary school, but the series that I really loved was Animorphs.

  8. OMG I LOVED BSC!!! 🙂 I was obsessed and wanted to be a combo of Stacey and Claudia, minus the diabetes and awful grades. 🙂 LOVED LOVED LOVED!!!
