I’ve read and loved Chelsea Handler’s other books, so when I saw that this book was coming out written by her friends and family, I was a little bit skeptical. After all, I’ve come to know and love Chelsea’s hilarious, makes me laugh out loud in public, writing and I was nervous that this book wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Unfortunately, I was a little bit right.

Let me preface this review by saying man am I glad I’m not friends with Chelsea Handler! This woman is c-r-a-z-y with a capital C. Of course I knew this from her previous books, but hearing it directly from her friends and families just solidified this fact.

While many of the stories in the book were funny, this book just lacked the sarcasm and wittiness that were present in Handler’s other books. Each chapter had the same exact set-up and feel to me; Chelsea’s friends told a story, called her names, but then ended the story by saying how much they love her and how she only plays pranks on those she truly loves and cares about. While I’m sure this is true, I just got bored when each chapter felt exactly the same to me. Plus, some of the chapters weren’t exactly well written or interesting. I found this book difficult to get through.

Even though some of the stories fell flat for me, I truly liked the idea of this book. After all, Chelsea Handler is crazy and it was fun to hear directly from her family and friends what she’s really like. Especially after reading her other books, I was wondering if it was all an act or if she really was as insane as she painted herself out to be and after reading LIES THAT CHELSEA HANDLER TOLD ME, I can honestly say that she is over the top crazy and hilarious. Sometimes to the point that I didn’t understand how her friends still remained friends with her; one of her friends practically left his honeymoon a day early due to a prank Chelsea played.

My favorite part of reading this book was being let inside Chelsea’s world and feeling as if I was right there along with her friends. I felt like I got a behind the scenes look at Chelsea Handler’s life, and it was definitely fun to get a sneak peak inside her crazy world. My favorite story was the one in which Chelsea snuck onto one of her coworkers computers and started a ridiculous email chain with one of the top execs at E! Too funny. A chapter written by Chelsea’s dog Chunk also proves amusing.

This book was great to get a little dose of Chelsea, but I’m looking forward to the next book she writes on her own.

2.5/5
