Partial Book Review: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

The Happiness Project
Author: Gretchen Rubin
ISBN: 9780061583254

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin is a book about Rubin’s real one year journey to find true happiness in her life. Now, Rubin wasn’t necessarily unhappy; after all, she has a wonderful husband, two daughters and an overall good life. Rubin’s goal was to find a way to find and appreciate all of the happy moments she experiences on a day to day basis.

Before starting the project, Rubin did a ton of research on happiness, some of which is sprinkled throughout the book. She decided to come up with a theme and goals for each month of the year. Different months focused on her marriage, her work, parenthood, friendship and more.

For some reason, I just couldn’t make it through this book. I read about 100 pages and then I gave up. The book was a little too research-heavy and while I knew the book would focus on Rubin’s journey, I thought I might find tid-bits that I could apply to my own life. The book began to get a bit mundane, so I decided to put it down.

However, I still think the idea of a Happiness Project is so cool and I admire Rubin for dedicating an entire year to finding happiness. I skimmed to the end of the book and it seemed like Rubin learned a ton throughout her year. After reading part of this and Regina Brett’s, God Never Blinks, I’ve definitely begun to think of my life, and the control I have over my own happiness in a different way. Though I didn’t LOVE this book, I appreciate it for the step back it forced me to take to evaluate my own happiness.

Interesting news about this book: According to many entertainment websites, including Entertainment Weekly, Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis is set to star in a television show based on this book and Rubin’s Happiness Project. Will you tune in?
