Book Review: Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Pretty Little Liars
Author: Sara Shepard

I don’t think Pretty Little Liars even needs a summary/introduction since it is all anyone in the book blog world and the TV world is talking about, but in case you’ve been living under a rock:

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard tells the story of five best friends who live in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb. One night when they are all hanging out, Alison, the queen bee of the group suddenly disappears.

The group of best friends slowly grow apart as they all struggle with their feelings about Alison’s disappearance and their own secrets. Three years later, the girls start receiving mysterious text messages from someone named “A.”

They all come together when Alison’s body is found and the text messages keep on coming.

I’m honestly mixing up some details from the book and the TV show, but the premise is there. Best friends, girl dies, other girls receive mysterious texts.

I loved this book and I am loving the TV show.

The characters are so individual and unique and I love all of their story lines. We have Aria who is having an inappropriate relationship with her English teacher. Hanna, fat girl turned skinny and popular who steals expensive clothes and accessories from the mall. Emily, who is struggling with her sexuality and then always perfect Spencer who has a crush on her sister’s fiance. Drama, right?

I love the location: the Main Line in Philadelphia. Since I’m a Philly girl myself, I like being able to literally put myself right into the story. The setting is fabulous; especially for this sort of plot. Wealthy girls meet mystery in the suburbs.

Can I just say for such an amazing book, Pretty Little Liars has a really terrible cover! I’ve walked by this book in bookstores numerous times and walked right past it because let’s be honest; I judge books by covers. First impressions count. I only paid attention to the books after I saw the first episode of the TV show, I was hooked.

I have been waiting patiently for my library to send me the next few in the PLL series. Can’t wait to get my hands on them!

Have you read this book or are you tuning into the TV show?

  1. I judge books by their covers and I have to agree, I don't like the book cover at all. I think I'm going to add this to my list of books to read as soon as I get the chance.

  2. The book was definitely a guilty pleasure read for me, and I'm excited to read the rest in the series! The show has been fun, too, and I'm amazed at how much detail — like an entire book's worth — they can cram into an episode.

I think I'm going to stop watching the show until I catch up on the books, though… I'm worried the books will be ruined for me!
