Book Review: The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott

The Unwritten Rule
Author: Elizabeth Scott
ISBN: 9781416978916

The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott tells the classic story of boy meets girl, boy and girl date, girl’s best friend and boy fall in love behind girl’s back and then things get heated.

Everyone knows the unwritten rule that you never ever like or date your best friend’s guy. In this story, Sarah can’t help but like her best friend Brianna’s boyfriend Ryan. Sarah even knew him and liked him first, but of course, she can’t tell Brianna that.

One night, Sarah and Ryan share a moment that she can never take back and Sarah is ridden with guilt.

Brianna has a tough life. Her parents are divorced and her dad ignores her. Her mom is overly critical often telling her she needs to lose weight. Sarah can’t bear to add to Brianna’s pain by telling her the truth about her and Ryan.

This book was a little slow-going. I ended up reading it in one sitting because I had a lot of free time, but if I had put it down, the story would have been a bit forgettable. The book also reminded me of Susane Colasanti’s latest novel Something Like Fate which played on the same theme, but did so a little better, in my opinion.

There was something about Brianna that I didn’t like in this story that made me not care if Sarah hurt her or not. I feel like the author was trying to make Brianna likable, but the way she treated Sarah without even meaning to was mean and selfish. Brianna was so compeltely clueless about Sarah’s feelings and often made Sarah be the third wheel on dates with Ryan. I just couldn’t get over how clueless Brianna was and it made me dislike her.

I wanted to see more happen in this story. I felt like I got to know all of the characters extremely well, which I love in a novel, but the plot was a little dry. We, of course, had the main conflict, but the book was so slow-going that it felt like except for a dramatic moment in the beginning and a dramatic moment at the end, the book was mainly Sarah’s internal conflict, which got boring after awhile.

I’ve read another book by Scott and I plan on reading more. I didn’t love this book, but don’t let that discourage you from trying some of her other novels.

2.5/5

  1. I really liked this book! But I just couldn't like Brianna. I guess because I had a friend exactly like her and the way she treated Sarah in the end was just really really wrong.
