Book Review: Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Committed
Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
ISBN: 97806770021659

Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert tells the story of Elizabeth coming to terms with marriage. Gilbert’s wildly popular novel, Eat Pray Love chronicled her journey through Italy, India and Indonesia. In Indonesia, she met Felipe, whom she fell in love with.

In Committed, we are re-introduced to Elizabeth and Felipe. They have been traveling the world together and have settled in a suburb of Philadelphia. On their way back to Philadelphia, they are stopped by security and Felipe is questioned by immigration officers. He has violated his Visa. The only way that Felipe can re-enter the United States is by marrying Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is shocked and confused. She has already had one bad marriage and she and Felipe were perfectly content to spend the rest of their lives together without a piece of paper deeming them officially recognized as married. Now, if Elizabeth wants her life to be with Felipe, she must come to terms with marriage.

I was super excited to read this book because like so many others, I fell in love with Eat, Pray, Love. Committed was a good book, but not great.

Elizabeth herself admits in the beginning of the book that this book will not be like her memoir, Eat, Pray, Love. Committed is a little bit of her personal story mixed with the history of marriage all over the world. Elizabeth takes on the roles of historian and anthropologist as she travels the world with Felipe, while they wait for their immigration papers to go through. Elizabeth meets people from all over the world and asks them questions about marriage and love.

I really wanted to LOVE this book, but unfortunately, I didn’t. I was able to fly through some sections of the book (mainly the parts where Elizabeth was talking about her personal story) but I found myself skimming through some of the historical bits.

Nothing changes the fact that Gilbert is an amazing writer. I found myself furiously bookmarking pages and typing up passages that I knew I’d want to read later on. I was definitely able to appreciate this book, even though I didn’t fall in love with it like I did her last book.

3.5/5

  1. I have to admit that I skimmed over this review as soon as I realised that it was the sequel to Eat Love Prey, I think I am going to read that book after I finish my current read, so I dont want to know anything, haha

  2. I just got Eat, Pray, Love through BookMooch and I'm really excited to read it! I know Gilbert has a strong following. Even though this one wasn't great for you, glad you still found passages and information to enjoy!

  3. I think it sounds like an interesting book, and do want to read it. Although, it might make sense to read Eat, Pray, Love first.

I just got Eat, Pray, Love from the library. I'm going to dig into it ASAP. Sorry that you didn't love this book like you wanted too. It still sounds like an interesting and worthwhile read.

  5. agreed!! Haha, but I haven't even read it. I just got this from the lib but am in the middle of Lunch in Paris and Julia Child My Life in Paris.. haha (AND just started Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but I'm in no rush to read it more because I just don't like Elizabeth Gilbert. I was wow'ed by her writing and style in Eat, Pray, Love but didn't find her very honest with us as readers which made her seem very unlikeable. Despite that, I was in love at the beginning of my first read-through! But only with the Italy portion, somewhat with India, and then the appeal petered out by Bali. The fact that I didn't "like" her ruined it to the point that I never made it through a second read. I think that alone is why I'm hardly interested in reading this, and less so in seeing the film. Thoughts?
