The Go-Getter Girl’s Guide
Author: Debra Shigley
ISBN: 9780312555757
I originally heard about this book over on Ms. Career Girl’s blog and I was so excited because I absolutely love books like this.
The Go-Getter Girl’s Guide by the wonderful Debra Shigley teaches young women how to succeed in the workplace and obtain the life they want and deserve. Sounds pretty simple, but it’s so much more than that.
What’s a Go Getter Girl (GGG)? Well, a GGG is someone who just seems to know exactly what to do to be successful. She always looks great, she gets the best assignments at work and she always has a smile on her face. In this book, Shigley teaches readers the basic of becoming a GGG in her own right.
Instead of just focusing on moving on up the ladder at your job, Ms. Shigley focuses several chapters on self-confidence, networking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, dressing for success, finding mentors, negotiating and so much more. This book isn’t just a guide to success at work- it’s a book about being a successful woman in life.
I devoured this book in just a few days. As I read, I became more and more motivated to get a jump start on my job search. I wanted to run out to the mall and buy some more professional clothing items to build my wardrobe. When I completed the book, I felt excited and ready to jump into the elusive “real world.”
Another great thing about this book is that Shigley does not just throw advice at the reader. She has facts and stories to back it up. She calls on other GGG’s to share their stories of success with some notable names such as author Emily Giffin and broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien.
Shigley’s writing is real, down to earth and conversational. Rather than reading a “how-to” or a “self-help” book, I felt like I was having a chat with a friend who gave really good advice and was funny at the same time.
I would recommend this book to any student about to graduate and or any young professional looking to gain an edge in the workplace. Enjoy!

It is useful to try everything in practise anyway and I like that here it's always possible to find something new. 🙂
