Young Adult Novel Contest

With NaNoWriMo less than a week away, why not enter a contest?

Check this out:

Serendipity Literary Agency, in collaboration with Sourcebooks and Gotham Writers’ Workshop, is hosting its first Young Adult Novel Discovery Competition for a chance to win a one-on-one consultation with one of New York’s leading YA literary agents!

YA literary agent Regina Brooks will be judging along with other editors from Sourcebooks. Basically, if your submission lands in the top 20, some very important editors will be checking out your work.

All you have to do is send the first 250 words of your YA novel. Want to know the best part? In honor of NaNoWriMo, the contest will be open from November 1 until November 30. Perfect timing!

Again, the link to the contest is here.

Since I am going to try to participate in NaNoWriMo this year, I am definitely considering entering this contest. I’ve never entered a writing contest before, though I am actively seeking them out now. I’m really nervous, but I figure, hey? What do I have to lose?

Have you ever entered any writing contests before? What have your experiences been like? Do you think you will enter this contest?

  1. Thanks for posting about this, Jess! I'm trying my hand at YA for the first time this NaNoWriMo, and I'll definitely send in my first 250 words for this contest.

I've entered quite a few over the years — including Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Award 2009. I made it to top 2,000 entries (out of 15,000, I think?) but didn't advance beyond that. It was a very, very nerve-wracking experience — and the feedback I got from "reviewers" through the program was a little harsh and unprofessional! I don't know if I would enter a competition like that again — just because it produced so much stress with so little hope of victory! Only one winner was chosen, after all, and almost no one in the chick lit/YA categories seemed to get any notice.
