A Book A Day Keeps The Doctor Away…

I just saw a link to this awesome NY Times article when I was perusing Nathan Bransford’s blog.

A 46 year old woman named Nina Sankovitch made it a goal to read a book a day for an entire year. She originally started reading to help make sense of her sister’s death.

Wow!

She posts reviews of the books she reads here.

Do you think you could read a book a day? Honestly, it sounds lovely, but sometimes life just gets in the way. I also think that forcing myself to read a whole book a day would stress me out and possibly turn me off to reading.

Could you do it?

  1. Wow, this sounds like a dream come true! I'd love to read a book per day, but with my crazy work schedule it's currently more like one or two per week. 🙁 Surely this woman doesn't have a job though?

  2. I used to be able to do that BEFORE I created my site…but now my reading habits have changed and I'm starting to read slower and savour the book a little more… (and yeah, life does kind of get in the way, hah!)

I LOVE Marcus Flutie too… he's just so wonderful. I have yet to read the last book though… I don't want him to leave! xD

I read that earlier this week and wow!

I used to read a lot when I was in Ireland about 4 books a week, but now that I am teaching it is about 1-2 a week in a good week. And I'm a fast reader!

  4. On some days, I can, in my workplace. When I'm not running the book site I'm a telephone operator and we do get breaks between calls, as well as lunchbreak etc. On numerous occasions I've completed books in a day. But not sure I could ALL the time!

  5. I read 365 days a year, but I definitely could not read a book a day for one year. I feel like if I did that I would shy away from certain books because of their length and would really be missing out! Plus, there's just not that kind of time in my day (working and student teaching)

That's a lot of reading! I don't know if I could read a book a day… a book or two a week is usually enough for me, as much as I love to read! 🙂

  7. What a phenomenal lady! I had so much fun checking out her site. Reading all day sounds good in theory, but I'm with you: life is just too busy for me. First of all, I lose eight hours right off the bat sitting at my desk! I guess if I hunkered down and only read every single night, I might be able to do it… oh, no — who am I kidding? There is no way I could do it!

I love this quote she has in her "about" area… about why she's reading in memory of her sister:

"I am not looking for relief: I am looking for resilience."

Amazing! Thanks for introducing me to the page, Jess! 🙂 And there's definitely an email coming your way soon!
