Monthly Check-In: Goodbye June, Hello July

monthly check-in- Jessica Lawlor
June in review: Teaching my very first public yoga class, exploring Bucks County wearing the famous (and 48-lb!) Google Trekker, teaching some of the sun salutations during a 108 sun salutations summer solstice event and officially graduating and becoming a certified yoga teacher (seen here with my two amazing teachers Lisa and Rachel)!

Each monthly check-in, I share three things I accomplished in the previous month and preview three things I’m excited about or hoping to accomplish in the month ahead. It’s fun to look back and forward, and as an added bonus, these monthly check-ins keep me accountable to reach my goals.

I hope you’ll join in and share your three things in the comments section! I’ve been thrilled to see that other bloggers enjoy my monthly check-ins and have adopted the format for their own blogs- this is AWESOME! If you write a similar monthly check-in/look ahead post, please feel free to utilize this format and be sure to leave a link in the comments below so we can all support you in your goals for the coming month!

In June, I…

1. Taught my first yoga class! (And taught two more times, as well!) On June 7, I taught my very first yoga class! After months of teacher training and hours of practice and practice teaching, I stood in front of a room of nearly 30 people and officially taught my first public yoga class. It was an amazing experience and throughout that 75 minutes, I knew without a doubt, that this is what I am supposed to do. I can’t wait to share yoga with more people! I was lucky enough to have two more teaching opportunities in June. I subbed a hot vinyasa class and also taught some of the sun salutations during the 108 Sun Salutations Summer Solstice event, held through my studio. I want to take advantage of every opportunity to teach to keep getting more comfortable and to continue improving!

2. Officially became a certified yoga teacher. Just this past weekend, I officially graduated from yoga teacher training and became a certified yoga teacher. Now I need to register with the Yoga Alliance to become a registered yoga teacher (RYT). To complete my training, I took a 100-question test. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time studying and preparing! The test was more challenging that I anticipated, but I took my time, thought out my answers (the test was a mix of multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank and situational questions) and I did just fine! We had a special ceremony the following day and each got tank tops (seen above!) and our official certificates. It’s so bittersweet to see yoga teacher training come to an end. I’ve loved every minute of this process!

3. Kicked off summer with lots of fun events and celebrations. June was a busy, busy month! Luckily, all of it was super fun and exciting. The month kicked off with one of my favorite races of the year- the Sunset Run 5K (although there was NO sun, it poured the entire time and was extremely cold!).  Next, I took a fun inversions workshop and was able to hold my first forearm stand. Later in the month, I spoke about public relations at Discover Lehigh Valley’s Tourism Marketing Day to a room full of 100+ people. I also celebrated the first anniversary of the Temple Women’s Network with a fabulous party at the Hotel Monaco’s rooftop deck, went to the Train concert, hung out at Spruce Street Harbor Park and spent lots of time with good friends.

In July, I will…

1. Travel to Portland, Oregon for my first World Domination Summit. I am SO pumped to travel to Portland next week for my first-ever World Domination Summit (WDS). For years, I’ve read Chris Guillebeau’s blog and recaps of WDS and dreamed of going. It’s finally happening! I’m heading there with my good friends Sara and Janelle and I can’t wait to meet everyone else going. I know it’s going to be inspiring to be around so many like-minded people who want to use their gifts and talents to change the world for the better. I also am PUMPED to see (and eat my way through) Portland. I had no clue Portland was such a foodie city! If you have any must-sees (or must-eats), please leave them in the comments below! I have a long list going, but want to make sure I see as much as possible!

2. Vacation in my favorite place on earth, Ocean City, New Jersey. Just a few days after I return from WDS, I’m heading to OCNJ for a week of vacation with my family. It just so happened that all of my travel this year is happening in July! I’ve grown up going down the shore with my family and staying for a week in OCNJ each year is always such a treat. Life at the beach is so relaxing and carefree. I’ve got a long list of books I want to read, new cocktails to make and try and lots of unwinding to do! I always look forward to renting bikes, going for morning runs on the boardwalk, eating funnel cake and Polish water ice and spending hours by the water. There’s truly nothing better.

3. Continue my yoga teaching journey. I’m proud of myself because normally before I even accomplish a goal, I’m already thinking ahead to the next thing to do AFTER that goal is achieved. With yoga teacher training, I learned to just be in the moment. Now that I’m finished, I want to continue teaching as much as possible. I plan to create a yoga section for my website, continue subbing and begin reaching out to people in the area about potential teaching opportunities. I also have some ideas around creating my own opportunities to teach with groups I am already a part of. Stay tuned! I plan to spend lots of time in July figuring out this next step for myself.
